Sutherland unveils new Operating Theatre Complex

In a significant stride towards advancing healthcare in our District, The Sutherland Hospital (TSH) unveiled its new Operating Theatre Complex last Monday.  

The NSW Government invested $81.5 million to redevelop TSH Operating Theatre Complex and an additional $7 million for a new MRI service which has removed the need to transfer up to 800 inpatients each year to St George Hospital and private providers, for scans.  

Minister for Health, Ryan Park, was on hand to officially open eight new operating theatres, two procedure rooms and a new surgical short stay unit. The new complex will allow TSH to expand its capacity to meet the surgical care needs of the local community now as well as future demands of a growing and ageing population.  

In the short time that the new complex has been opened, the new models of care implemented are delivering improved outcomes for patients. The spacious design of the Operating Theatre Complex has been planned to ensure a seamless workflow for medical professionals, while creating a pleasant and comfortable environment for patients. 

The inauguration of the new facility acknowledged the dedication and collaboration of healthcare professionals, surgeons, nurses, support staff, and the project team at TSH, who played critical roles in ensuring the success of the redevelopment and the overall well-being of patients.  

Minister Park said, “I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to bring this fantastic new addition to the hospital to completion. I also want to acknowledge the work of the medical teams and staff at this hospital – thank you for the compassion and care you provide this community.”  

General Manager of TSH, Vicki Weeden said, "The state of the art operating suite and MRI machine, which are part of the Sutherland Hospital redevelopment, will make a big difference to the care we deliver to residents of the Shire."
